The Pankratz Eye Institute (PEI) was established in Columbus in 2000 by Dr. Michael J. Pankratz, MD.  PEI provides both professional ophthalmologic medical and surgical care as well as facilities for doing those surgeries. Services offered include laser refractive surgery (LASIK), cataract surgery, and treatments for glaucoma and diabetic eye disease as well as numerous other eye conditions.  On opening day, PEI had a staff of three persons.  By 2001, the staff had grown to nine full-time and four part-time persons.  Today, PEI employs eighteen persons and expects to add an additional 4-5 positions by year-end, a 500% growth rate in staff alone.

In July 2005, Pankratz Eye Institute moved into new offices located at 3135 Middle Road. The new location will offer additional space for a second operating room as well as expanded capabilities for providing new services.

PEI's growth in Columbus was due to its centralized location in an area of strong regional growth, their ability to provide exceptional service because of an accomplished work force and physician, and a good business plan.  Costs of operation were very reasonable and they were able to grow at more than twice the rate that was anticipated at inception.  In fact, they reached all of their ten-year goals in less than five years.

Pankratz Eye Institute's surgery facilities are licensed by the State of Indiana, certified by Medicare, and are listed as a preferred provider for several national insurance carriers. Dr. Pankratz is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and The International Society of Refractive Surgeons.
