In October 1997, Phil Miles started DesignTek Engineering in the basement of his home.  In February of 2000, he decided to move his business into the incubator at CEDC and by October of 2002 he had taken on a partner, Robin Frazier.

DesignTek Engineering specializes in injection mold tooling design and engineering. In 2002, they invested in a 3D solid design software package called SolidWorks, which allowed them to develop their customer’s molds in a 3D solid environment, providing a more accurate and complete result than the previous 2D format. This elevated their company above their competition in capabilities and services. The software also allowed them to complete the design work faster, improving customer efficiency. In addition to mold design, they also offer consultation and conceptual mold engineering services and are able to evaluate plastic product design for moldability issues.

Despite the struggling economic environment and outsourcing to China, DesignTek has been able to generate a substantial level of growth.  By providing excellent service, honesty, and a valued product, they continue to see growth in 2005, which is shaping up to be their best year yet.  The partners admit that providing a quality service, employing key people, networking and learning from other business leaders has been the key to their success and continued growth.
