Chamber Endorses High School Renovation Project

The Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce is advocating for the support of the 3,600 students who are educated in our high schools everyday and for the future of our community by endorsing the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation’s plan for the High School Renovation Project.

Hundreds of hours of work by teachers, school administrators, students, parents, and community citizens have been amassed to create detailed proposals for renovating the respective buildings of Columbus North and Columbus East.  These proposals center around three overarching objectives:

  1. Improve the way we serve students

  2. Improve the existing facilities and make improvements to support learning

  3. Accomplish the first two objectives in an affordable and responsible way

We must improve the way we serve our students.  Today’s students must be competent in 21st Century skills.  Our facilities must accommodate effective learning strategies in developing these skills including wireless technology, better media centers and collaborative project space.  Critical improvements are also necessary to create a safe learning environment such as additional classroom space and expanded hallways, lighting, acoustics, and thermal comfort.  We must also continue to support the education of the whole student by developing both sides of their minds through the support of vital extracurricular programs such as music, the arts, and athletics.  But these activities require investment in order to remain both functional and competitive.

Regardless of what industry or career position a student is interested in pursuing today, you can be assured that the industry is rapidly becoming high-tech, high-touch, and knowledge-intense.  Beyond all other issues, our companies in Columbus are increasingly citing “a prepared and educated workforce” as their number one necessity and concern.  Without developing the full educational and creative capacity of every human being in Columbus, we cannot succeed socially or economically.

The membership of the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce wants to see our City continue to become the best community it can be.  We believe that improving the way in which we serve students should be our highest aspiration and the best way to do that today is by supporting our two high schools of Columbus East and Columbus North.  We are truly privileged to be one community with two great high schools.
