Taxation by Classification (1%, 2%, 3%)
SJR
1 proposes an amendment to the state constitution to limit
the maximum property taxes that may be imposed on property
– 1% for homesteads, 2% for rental properties and 3% for
businesses. The measure passed the Senate and now moves
to the House for consideration.
This resolution effectively scraps the “uniform and equal”
language in the Indiana Constitution. Instead, it
authorizes the General Assembly to tax properties of equal
value unequally and unfairly based on how the property is
classified (used).
Moreover, it would establish a state policy that says
business property should be taxed up to three times the
rate of other property classifications. This drastic
course of action is not necessary to provide meaningful
property tax relief and could prove extremely detrimental
to our economy as it would discourage capital investment.
While it’s important that any property tax solution be
beneficial to homeowners, the Columbus Chamber wants to
make sure that it doesn’t come at the severe detriment to
the business community.
Illegal Alien Matters
SB 335 would penalize employers for hiring illegal
immigrants, make it illegal to harbor an illegal immigrant
(with some exceptions for health-care providers, religious
organizations and family members). Under SB 335, businesses
who knowingly hire illegal immigrants three times in 10
years would lose their license to do business in Indiana.
This bill places the burden of ensuring that people can
lawfully work in this country on employers rather ant the
proper governmental entities who should be dealing with
immigration matters.
